The Chinese Garden

The Chinese garden is a place designed for the appreciation of poetry and music. Just as the poet or musician carefully crafts his poem or music for maximum beauty, harmony and emotion, the gardener has done the same. His materials are land, water, plants, buildings, walkways and bridges that he organizes into a poem of landscape beauty. When you walk through the garden it is the visual equivalent of hearing a poem recited. The buildings in a Chinese garden are as important part of the garden. They are of exquisite design and craftsmanship. They house a collection of paintings, calligraphy, spirit stones, and fine Chinese furniture and crafts and are meant to be places one can sit and hear poetry and musical recitals. The gardener has carefully orchestrated the materials of his medium so that the views from the windows of these buildings are landscape poems. Suzhou in Jiangsu province is the best place to see Chinese gardens, as there are numerous well-preserved gardens in this city. A selection of photos from two of the better known gardens of Suzhou are presented on this page -The Garden of the Master of the Nets and The Humble Administrator's Garden.
